Honoring the 'Z Man'

Tuesday, January 29, 2008
EDITORIAL BOARD - The Oregonian

"He had the opposite of a swagger, an understated combination of savvy and empathy, fairness and consistency, that truly disarms suspects. It endeard the Z Man to everyone he worked with, including people he arrested."

Portland Police have lost a friend

by Robert J. King

Police work was a calling for Mark Zylawy He possessed the qualities that can’t be trained into a new officer. He was kind and decent and had a deep reservoir of compassion for both friends and crooks alike.

We know Mark leaves behind a wife and four children and our thoughts and prayers are with them now.

Mark made an impact on all of us. He had more old-school, street-cop in him than the rest of us put together. Every day he went to roll call; he hit the street; he took his calls in his district; and Mark made Portland neighbors safer on a daily basis. For 17 years Mark was willing to get out of his police car and talk to people. If they needed it, he searched them. If they had a warrant, he arrested them. Mark would tell me he was cleaning up Portland one crack pipe at a time.

Mark Zylawy exemplified what is best about the Portland Police Bureau. Mark, we salute you today and everyday.

We love you and will miss you,
Your Brothers and Sisters

From the Chief

“Mark earned the respect of everyone by his hard work, dedication, and integrity. Mark loved being a police officer and gave more than we will ever be able to give back.”

Chief Rosanne M. Sizer

Early January 27, 2008, Portland Police Officer Mark Zylawy was killed in a collision on I-5 southbound in Vancouver. Zylawy was on his way to work at Northeast Precinct. He was 40 years old and had been a police officer for 17 years. Mark was loved and respected throughout the Bureau and the community. He is survived by his wife and four children.
